PRESENTIMENT
I am still as
an autumn tree
In which there
is no wind,
No breath of
movement – yet
There on a top
branch,
For no cause I
can see,
A single leaf
oscillates
Violently.
To what thin
melody
Does it dance?
What lost note
vibrates
In me?
From the past
or the future?
Memory
Or Presentiment?
PRESSENTIMENTO
Imóvel como árvore
no outono,
onde não bate o
vento, onde não há
sopro ou movimento
e, mesmo assim,
no alto, num galho,
por nenhuma razão
aparente,
uma única folha
oscila
violentamente.
Para que melodia
ela dança?
Que nota perdida
vibra
em mim?
Do passado ou do
futuro?
Memória
ou
Pressentimento?
WITHIN THE WAVE
Within the
hollow wave there lies a world,
Gleaming
glass-perfect, rising to be hurled
Into a thousand
fragments on the sand,
Driven by
tide’s inexorable hand.
Now in the
instant while disaster towers,
I glimpse a
land more beautiful than ours;
Another sky,
more lapis-lazuli,
Lit by
unsetting suns; another sea
By no horizon
bound; another shore,
Glistening with
shells I never saw before.
Smooth mirror
of the present, poised between
The crest’s
“becoming” and the foam’s “has been” –
How luminous
the landscape seen across
The crystal
lens of an impending loss!
Agora, neste
instante, em que a catástrofe é certa,
percebo, de súbito,
uma terra mais bela que a nossa,
outro céu, com azul
mais intenso,
onde brilham sóis
que nunca se põem, outro mar,
sem horizonte a
cercá-lo; outra praia,
refletindo o brilho
de conchas jamais vistas.
espelho suave do
presente, suspenso
entre a crista “que
se ergue” e a espuma “que passou” –
como é luminosa a
paisagem que vejo através
das lentes de
cristal desta iminente perda!
FAMILY ALBUM
On a photograph
of my father and mother just married
My parents, my
children:
Who are you,
standing there
In an old
photograph – young married pair
I never saw
before, yet see again?
You pose
somewhat sedately side by side,
In your small
yard of the suburban road.
He stretches a
little in young manhood’s pride
Broadening his
shoulders for the longed-for load,
The wife that
he has won, a home his own;
His growing
powers hidden as spring, unknown,
But surging in
him toward their certain birth,
Explosive as
dandelions in the earth.
She leans upon
his arm, as if to hide
A strength
perhaps too forward for a bride,
Feminine in her
bustle and long skirt;
She looks
demure, with just a touch of flirt
In archly
tilted head and squinting smile
At the
photographer, she watches while
Pretending to
be girl, although so strong,
Playing the
role of wife (“Here I belong!”),
Anticipating
mother, with man for child,
Amused at all
her roles, unreconciled.
And I who gaze
at you and recognize
The budding
gestures that were soon to be
My cradle and
my home, my trees, my skies,
I am your
child, staring at you with eyes
Of love and
grief for parents who have died;
But also with
omniscience born of time,
Seeing your
unlined faces, dreams untried,
Your
tentativeness and your brave attack,
I am no longer
daughter gazing back;
I am your
mother, watching far ahead,
Seeing events
so clearly now they’re gone
And both of you
are dead, and I alone,
And in my own
life now already past
That garden in
the grass where you two stand.
I long to
comfort you for all you two
In time to come
must meet and suffer through,
To answer with
a hindsight-given truth
The questions
in those wondering eyes of youth.
I long to tell
you, starting on your quest,
“You’ll do it
all, you know, you’ll meet the test.”
Mother
compassionate and child bereft
I am; the past
and present, wisdom and innocence,
Fused by one
flicker of a camera lens
Some stranger
snapped in laughter as he left
More than a
half a century ago –
My children, my
parents.
ÁLBUM DE
FAMÍLIA
A partir de uma
foto de casamento dos meus pais
Meus pais, meus
filhos:
quem são vocês,
posando numa velha
foto – recém-casados,
como nunca antes os
vi, embora pareça vê-los novamente?
Posam, serenamente,
lado a lado,
num pequeno jardim
próximo à estrada nos subúrbios da cidade.
ele parece um jovem
orgulhoso de si mesmo,
preparando-se para
enfrentar o destino que escolheu,
ao lado da mulher
que desposou e da casa que construirão juntos;
seu poder é latente
e oculto como a primavera, desconhecida,
mas que se
vislumbra desde o nascimento,
fulgurante como
viçosos dentes-de-leão.
Ela se apoia em seu
braço, tentando ocultar
uma força interior
talvez incomum para uma noiva,
ela tão feminina em
seu longo vestido branco;
parece acanhar-se,
com o leve meneio
de sua cabeça
reclinada, sorrindo de soslaio
para o fotógrafo,
como se o observasse,
como uma menina,
embora se mostre forte
em seu papel de
mulher (“Este é meu lugar!”),
antecipando-se à
maternidade de seus filhos homens,
e divertindo-se com
tantos papéis irreconciliáveis.
Olho os dois e
reconheço
os gestos que logo
iriam se tornar
os que me
embalariam e confortariam, dando-me um lar;
coragem,
deixo de ser a
filha que os procura no passado;
sou sua mãe,
olhando à frente no tempo,
antevendo
claramente, agora que tudo já passou,
hoje ambos mortos
e, eu, sozinha,
vivendo no mesmo
jardim
onde se casaram.
Gostaria de
confortá-los por tudo que ainda
iriam viver e
sofrer,
e lhes responder,
com uma verdade iluminada,
as perguntas que
passeiam por seus olhos deslumbrados.
Gostaria de lhes
dizer, ao iniciarem sua busca:
“Vocês farão tudo
e, em tudo, serão testados.”
Sou a mãe cheia de
compaixão e a filha abandonada.
sou o passado e o
presente, a sabedoria e a inocência,
ei-los fundidos num
instante capturado pelas lentes da câmera
de um desconhecido
que, sem saber, fez a foto,
há mais de meio
século – para me trazer de volta
meus filhos, meus
pais.
BROKEN SHELL
Cease searching
for the perfect shell, the whole
Inviolate form
no tooth of time has cracked;
The alabaster
armor still intact
From sand’s
erosion and the breaker’s roll.
What can we salvage
from the ocean’s strife
More lovely
than these skeleton that lie
Like scattered
flowers open to the sky,
Yet not
despoiled by their consent to life?
The pattern on
creation morning laid,
By softened lip
and hollow, unbetrayed;
The gutted
frame endures, a testament,
Even in
fragment, to that first intent.
Look at this
spiral, stripped to polished nerve
Of growth.
Erect as compass in its curve,
It swings
forever to the absolute,
Crying out
beauty like a silver flute.
CONCHA PARTIDA
Não procures mais a
concha perfeita, a forma
inteira e
inviolada, que não trincou sob os dentes do tempo;
a armadura de
alabastro ainda intocada
poderíamos resgatar do mar inconstante
do que estes
pequenos esqueletos que se espalham
como flores
dispersas sob o céu,
ainda intactas em
sua renúncia de vida?
Eis a manhã da
criação
retida em seu
pequeno lábio, concavidade vazia, destemida;
sua moldura vazada
persiste, como um testamento,
em fragmentos, de
seu primeiro movimento terreno.
Veja a espiral que
mostra as nervuras
de seu crescimento.
Erguida como uma bússola em seu arco,
balança-se
eternamente no absoluto,
cantando a beleza
como uma flauta de prata.
REVISITATION
You have been
dead for months; the daylight mind
Has noted in
its record the exact
Moment of
dying, has transferred the fact
To its
dream-counterpart – the shadowy pool
Where all
events are mirrored upside down,
Distorted but
more vivid than by day –
That nowhere on
this earth can you be found;
No here, not
there, nor on a journey bound
From which
you’ll soon be back. No just away,
But gone “for
good”, you are.
Even though I know,
And grief is
past and life goes on – even so,
Still I must
make a faithful pilgrimage
To those
particular landmarks that were yours,
Or intimately
haunted by your sight;
Not in the hope
of finding you again,
Not in
obeisance to your memory,
Nor
self-indulgently in search of pain.
No, I must go
Back to the
places where you put your hand,
To see them now
without you, gutted, bare,
Swept hollow of
your presence. I must stand
Alone and in
their empty faces stare,
To find another
truth I do not know;
To balance
those unequal shifted planes
Of our
existence, yours and mine; to fix
The whirling
landscapes of the heart in which
I walk a
stranger both to space and time.
I must go back;
In each
familiar corner wait until
I witness once
again the flesh turn cold,
The spirit
parting from the body’s hold;
And let it go,
and love the landscape still;
But now on only
for itself alone,
As you once
loved it when, in flesh and bone,
You walked it
first, naked of memories,
And sharp with
life, you loved its flesh and bone.
For I must meet
and marry in myself
The truth of
what has ended, what is new;
The past and
future; death and life. And when
At last the two
conflicting pairs are met;
The planes are
balanced and the landscapes set;
The strands of
past and future tied in one
Tough,
weather-beaten, salted twist of hemp,
The present –
Then
I shall be able
to refind myself,
And also, you.
REVISITAÇÃO
Já morreste há
alguns meses; a mente diurna
anotou no
calendário o dia
da tua morte e
transferiu-a
para seus sonhos –
o sombrio lago,
onde todos os fatos
refletem-se invertidos
e distorcidos,
presente neste mundo;
nem aqui, nem ali,
tampouco retornarás
de tua viagem. Não
viajaste,
mas foste embora
“para sempre”.
Mesmo sabendo
que a tristeza já
passou e que a vida
segue seu curso –
mesmo assim,
preciso fazer uma
peregrinação
aos lugares que
foram teus
ou intimamente
entrevistos pelo teu olhar;
não na esperança de
te reencontrar,
não em tua memória,
nem sofrendo a dor
de ter-te perdido.
Não, preciso
voltar aos lugares
onde puseste a mão,
revê-los agora sem
ti, vazios, despidos,
sem a tua presença.
Preciso estar ali
sozinha e olhar
esses lugares vazios,
para encontrar a
verdade que desconheço;
e equilibrar as
incomparáveis asas
de tua existência,
a tua e a minha; e guardar nos olhos
as paisagens
oscilantes do coração, onde
caminho como uma
estranha através do tempo e do espaço.
Preciso voltar,
e esperar em cada
um desses lugares conhecidos, até
novamente ver tua
carne enregelar,
o espírito deixar
teu corpo;
e deixar-te partir
e, ainda assim, continuar a amar a paisagem;
porém agora apenas
por ela mesma,
como tu a amaste,
quando, ainda vivo,
caminhaste por ela
pela primeira vez, sem memórias,
e amaste
intensamente esta paisagem.
Porque preciso
encontrar e reconciliar-me
com a verdade
daquilo que se foi e aceitar o novo;
o passado e o
futuro; a morte e a vida. E, quando,
finalmente, os
opostos se encontrarem,
as asas se
equilibrarem e as paisagens se redefinirem,
os fios do passado
e do futuro se entrelaçarem,
tecendo um linho
forte, gasto e usado pelo tempo –
o presente – então,
poderei reencontrar
a mim,
e, também, a ti.
BARE TREE
Already I have
shed the leaves of youth,
Stripped by the
wind of time down to the truth
Of winter
branches. Linear and alone
I stand, a lens
for lives beyond my own,
A frame through
which another’s fire may glow,
A harp on which
another’s passion, blow.
The pattern of
my boughs, an open chart
Spread on the
sky, to others may impart
Its leafless
mysteries that once I prized,
Before bare
roots and branches equalized;
Tendrils that
tap the rain or twigs the sun
Are all the
same; shadow and substance one.
Now that my
vulnerable leaves are cast aside,
There’s nothing
left to shield, nothing to hide.
Blow through
me, Life, pared down at last to bone,
So fragile and
so fearless have I grown!
ÁRVORE NUA
Despiram-me das
folhas de minha juventude,
levadas pelo vento
do tempo, deixando-me
como aos galhos no
inverno. Permaneço,
ereta e solitária,
a testemunhar outras vidas,
emoldurando
outro brilho,
harpa a tocar uma
paixão que não é minha.
Minha ramagem, um
leque aberto
ao céu, novamente
trará
os mistérios
desfolhados que tanto amei,
com raízes e ramos
igualmente nus,
os galhos que
sorvem a chuva ou balançam ao sol
são os mesmos; a
sombra e a essência são uma.
Agora que já perdi
as folhas tão frágeis,
não há nada mais a
cobrir, nada mais a ocultar.
Vida, sopra por mim
agora, finalmente despida,
pois me tornei tão
frágil e tão destemida!
Anne Morrow
Lindbergh (1906-2001)
