SPACE
For beauty, for
significance, it’s space
We need; and
since we have no space today
In which to
frame the act, the word, the face
Of beauty, it’s
no longer beautiful.
A tree’s
significant when it’s alone,
Standing
against the sky’s wide open face;
A sail,
spark-white upon the space of sea,
Can pin a whole
horizon into place.
Encompassed by
the dark, a candle flowers,
Creating space
around it as it towers,
Giving the room
a shape, a form, a name;
Significance is
born within the frame.
A word falls in
the silence like a star,
Searing the
empty heavens with the scar
Of beautiful
and solitary flight
Against the
dark and speechless space of night.
ESPAÇO
Precisamos de
espaço para a beleza e seu significado,
e como hoje não há
mais espaço
para agir e falar,
o rosto
da beleza não se
mostra mais tão belo.
A árvore se destaca
ao se erguer sozinha
contra a amplidão
do céu,
uma vela, uma
pequena mancha branca no mar aberto,
recoloca o
horizonte em seu lugar.
Em meio à
escuridão, a luz da vela
cria espaço à sua
volta, enquanto queima,
dando forma,
contorno e nome ao quarto,
neste momento nasce
o seu significado.
Uma palavra rompe o
silêncio como a estrela cadente,
traçando seu voo
belo e solitário
contra a imensidão
do céu,
contra o insondável
silêncio da noite.
WINTER TREE
Again the oak,
bare, stripped and barren, brings
More
confirmation to the heart than Spring’s
Returning
green; more courage to refind
The
winter-bones of spirit unobscured
By summer-flesh
of leaves. The troubled mind
After the
Fall’s deception, reassured –
After the wind,
after the winter storm –
By deep return
to discipline of form.
What power
hidden in the winter tree
Can set the
captive spirit running free,
Following vault
of trunk and leap of limb,
Singing through
fountain of the branch a hymn,
Spilling
through laughter of the twigs in flight
Our to the
limitless expanse of light?
Does mortal
eye, so trained by mortal frame,
Find in the
tree’s uplifted boughs the same
Gesture of
supplication or of praise
We mortals use,
when mortal arms we raise?
Or does the
adult mind, remembering
The child’s
conception of the sky, still cling
To images of
God who sits on high?
(We too might
reach Him, could we touch the sky!)
Or does the
startled spirit recognize
A deeper
kinship that the mind denies,
Within the
skeletal form of tree concealed,
Symbol of its
own struggle find revealed;
A form so
contrapuntal and yet pure;
The chosen
path, fortuitous, yet sure:
The thrust, the
spread, the lift, apparently
So free, and
yet tap-rooted in the ground;
The shape, an
individual, yet bound
By its generic
law: it is a tree.
Does spirit see
– even recall, somehow,
The tortured
path that’s taken by the bough,
Remember as its
own, no need to learn,
Each thrust and
block and compensating turn
The sap must
make in its slow odyssey,
Journey from
trunk to twig, from earth to sky?
And does the
pattern here not clarify,
Perceived at
last in its entirety,
A confirmation
of essential trend;
Assurance that
the tree does in the end,
In its slow
pilgrimage from root to flower,
Pulsing with
all of sap’s blind, patient power –
Power of faith,
of prayer, of prophecy –
Reach in the
polar buds the open sky?
ÁRVORE NO INVERNO
Novamente o
carvalho, despido e desfolhado,
traz mais certezas
ao meu coração do que o retorno
verdejante da
primavera; traz-me mais coragem
para reencontrar os
ossos gelados do espírito
nas folhas viçosas
do verão. a mente confusa,
após a decepção do
outono, é uma confirmação –
depois do vento,
após a tempestade do inverno –
no retorno à
disciplina da forma.
Que poder oculto há
nas árvores no inverno
que liberta o
espírito cativo
dos troncos e dos
ramos ressequidos,
cantando nos galhos
o seu hino,
derramando o riso nas
folhas
que voam no espaço
infinito da luz?
Pode o olho mortal,
tão habituado ao seu destino,
encontrar, na forma
ereta das árvores, o mesmo
gesto de súplica ou
oração,
que nós mortais
usamos ao erguer os braços para rezar?
Ou a mente adulta, lembrando-se
da visão infantil
do céu, ainda se apega
à imagem de deus
sentado no alto?
(Também poderíamos
alcançá-Lo, se pudéssemos tocar o céu!)
Ou reconhece o
espírito assustado
uma semelhança mais
profunda que a mente nega,
na forma esquálida
e oculta da árvore,
símbolo de sua
própria luta, finalmente revelado;
uma forma tão
estranha e ainda tão pura;
o caminho escolhido
ao acaso, porém seguro;
sua forma, suas
dimensões, sua altura, aparentemente
tão livres, estão
presas à terra;
seu contorno,
individual, no entanto, foi concebido
por sua própria
lei: é uma árvore.
Pode o espírito ver
– ou mesmo lembrar, de algum modo,
o caminho tortuoso
dos ramos,
e lembrar o caminho
aberto naturalmente
de cada movimento e
avanço
que a seiva deve empreender
em sua lenta odisseia,
passando pelo
tronco, indo da terra ao céu?
E o trajeto aqui
descrito não demonstra,
finalmente
percebido em sua inteireza,
a confirmação do
caminho essencial;
confirmação de que
a árvore pode, afinal,
após sua lenta
peregrinação, indo da raiz à flor,
pulsando, com todo
o poder cego e paciente da seiva –
poder de fé, de
reza e profecia –
alcançar, nos
brotos, a vastidão do céu?
PAS DE DEUX –
WINTER
Caught in a
silver spell this kingdom lies,
Enchanted like
the Sleeping Beauty’s world,
Where clocks
are faceless and where flags are furled,
Where page and
princess droop with bud-closed eyes,
Waiting the
touch of man to come to flower.
The skier is
the prince who brings the power
Of life and
motion; he alone can pass,
Spanning with
feet of flame, the steep crevasse.
He scales the
crystal mountain, dares to ride
The dragon of
the snows to claim his bride,
Shattering the
frozen breath of palace hall,
To wake the
marble princess from her thrall,
Winning a
partner for his frenzied skill,
He dances with
the diamond-hearted hill.
PAS DE DEUX –
INVERNO
Neste reino, mergulhado num encantamento de prata,
como no mundo da Bela Adormecida,
os relógios não avançam e as bandeiras não tremulam,
pajens e a princesa sonham docemente,
rompendo o ar gelado do palácio,
despertando a marmórea princesa de seu encanto,
e após conquistá-la com imensa coragem,
rodopiam com seu coração de diamante.

ASCENT
Plunge deep
Into the sky
O wing
Of the soul.
Reach
Past the last
pinnacle
Of speech
Into the vast
Inarticulate
face
Of silence.
Outleap
The turbulent
gust
From forest,
Or the dust
Spiraling from
the plain,
A yellow stain,
Swiftly erased
again
In traceless
tracts
Of space.
Up, up beyond
The giddy peaks
of fear,
The glacial
fields of doubt,
The sheer
Cliffs of
despair;
Climb the steep
stair
Of air.
There,
Where the
gimlet screw
Of
height-driven hawk
Pierces the
blue,
Pursue!
There,
Where the wing
Has ceased to
beat
For its own
Victory or
defeat,
Find,
Far behind
The pale
cloud-pastures
Of the mind,
The unbroken
blind
Brightness of
sheer
Atmosphere.
Here,
crystalline,
Deep, full,
serene,
Here flows
The still,
unfathomed river
Of repose.
Here out of
sight,
Unseen but
known,
Here glides the
stream
Of compassion.
Here alone
May rest
The strangled
breast
Of
long-impassioned flight.
Here soar
With more than
wing
Above earth’s
floor;
Here ride
Limitless on a
tide
No hawk has
ever tried.
Here turn
In marble-firm
Security;
Here learn
To pivot on a
needle-point –
Eternity.
Here whole
At last, above
The halting
flight
That blindly
rose
To gain a
hidden height,
Wing of the
soul
Repose,
Serene
In the stream
Of Love.
ASCENSÃO
Alcem as
profundezas
do céu
ó asas
da minha alma.
Atinjam
além do último
pináculo
das palavras
a vasta
e inarticulada face
do silêncio.
Sobrevoem
a turbulência
das florestas
ou da poeira
das planícies,
a mancha amarela
que suave se apaga
sem deixar rastros
no espaço.
Voem acima
dos cumes do medo,
dos campos gelados
da dúvida,
das escarpadas
mãos do desespero;
subam a íngreme
escada
de ar.
ali,
onde o olho da
águia
perscruta o céu,
busquem!
Ali,
onde as asas
param de bater,
vencidas ou
vitoriosas,
encontrem,
ainda além
dos pálidos pastos
de nuvens
da mente,
a impávida e cega
luz
da atmosfera.
Aqui, cristalino,
profundo, pleno,
sereno,
aqui flui
o perene e
incomensurável rio
do repouso.
Aqui,
imperceptível,
mas conhecido,
flui o córrego
da compaixão.
apenas aqui
pode repousar
o peito que tanto
ansiou este voo
apaixonado.
Aqui, voa-se
com mais do que
asas
sobre a terra;
aqui cavalga-se
infinitamente a uma
altura
jamais sonhada por
nenhuma águia.
aqui, a segurança
torna-se tão sólida
quanto o mármore;
aqui aprende-se
a girar sobre a
ponta de uma agulha –
eis a eternidade.
Aqui, finalmente
plenas, acima
do imenso voo,
que cego se elevou
a uma altura
desconhecida,
asas do meu
espírito,
repousem,
serenas,
no rio
do Amor.
FLIGHT OF BIRDS
Watching the
patterns of these birds in flight,
Fluid as music
on a page and white
As falling
petals, I find swift escape.
Then all at
once my life take sudden shape,
And I can
understand the misprized art
Of reading
palms or tea leaves in a cup;
Remember wise
men searching in the skies,
Looking for
omens in the track of birds,
Telling the
future in cloud-darkened lines.
It is no fate
in these external signs
We read; it is
ourselves – ourselves we see,
Transmuted into
bird or cloud or tree,
Familiar
fragments, here arranged in form;
As a
kaleidoscope contains the power
From common
specks and straws to make a flower.
Act of creation
in which the stone,
The sculptor,
and the spectator, are one –
Here, where the
art and artist coincide,
Where universe
and private world collide,
Magic of Mandala
and Rorschach meet;
And childhood
memories again repeat
Who loses life
shall gain it – Miracle
The heart
reborn upon a flight of birds
Can now accept
and recognize in words.
REVOADA
Observando o
contorno dos pássaros em revoada,
seguindo como uma
pauta de música, brancos
como pétalas que
caem, encontro um breve refúgio.
então, de repente,
minha vida assume uma nova forma
e compreendo a
menosprezada arte
de ler as palmas
das mãos ou as folhas em uma xícara de chá;
lembro-me dos
sábios sondando os céus,
percebendo
presságios no voo dos pássaros,
e vendo o futuro em
linhas ocultas pelas nuvens.
Não é o destino que
lemos nesses sinais;
vemos apenas – e,
tão somente, a nós mesmos,
transmutados em
pássaros, nuvens e árvores,
fragmentos
familiares, rearranjados de outro modo;
como num
caleidoscópio pequenos pedaços de vidro
colorido se
transformam em flor.
Um ato da criação
em que, na pedra,
o escultor e o
esculpido são um –
aqui, onde arte e
artista coincidem,
onde o universo e o
mundo interior se fundem,
a mágica da Mandala
e do Rorschach se unem;
e mais uma vez a
memória da infância faz-nos lembrar:
Ganha a vida quem a
perde – Milagre,
o coração renascido
em uma revoada de pássaros,
agora pode
aceitá-lo e reconhecê-lo em palavras.
BACK TO THE
ISLANDS
Here on the
mainland I am rooted down,
Tethered to
earth’s four corners like a barn,
Balanced to
bear the seasons as they ride,
Hay-carts and
cattle, grain and crops, in stride.
Square to the
world, I watch the sun’s slow pace,
Morning and
evening, from my steadfast place.
But when I
leave the mainland and I go
Back to the
islands where the waters flow
In unpredicted
paths, and landmarks shift
With rudder
angle or a full sail’s lift,
My firm
Newtonian universe dissolves,
And in my heart
the compass rose revolves.
As Bach once
played upon a folk-worn song,
Tide, wind, and
water counterpoint among
Familiar
granite slabs until they seem
No longer
static, borne upon a stream,
As seagulls on
a shaft of air in flight;
Or boats –
white sides, pine-masted – pulling tight
Against their
anchors, waiting for the right
Touch to raise
sails, go scudding out of sight.
And I – I feel
my pattern too might change,
Living among
the islands; all is strange –
A bay, a cove,
a sudden turn of tide,
An unexpected
channel never tried
Before. Time
and the mainland stand aside
Once more –
Once more, life shatters open wide!
DE VOLTA ÀS ILHAS
Aqui, em terra
firme, onde lancei minhas raízes,
de pé como um
celeiro,
feito para suportar
a passagem das estações,
com carroças de
feno e gado, cheias de grãos e colheitas.
presa ao mundo,
observo o lento movimento do sol,
todos os dias, de
manhã à noite, neste mesmo lugar.
Mas quando abandono
a terra firme e retorno
às ilhas, onde as
águas escorrem
por imprevistos
caminhos e as referências mudam
de ângulo ou se iça
uma vela a todo pano,
meu firme universo
newtoniano se dissolve,
e, em meu coração,
a rosa-dos-ventos começa a girar.
Como ao som de uma
música de Bach,
ondas, ventos e
águas contrastam
com pedras de
granito, que parecem
agitar-se acima da
corrente,
como gaivotas
levadas pelo vento;
ou barcos – de
brancos costados e mastros eretos – presos
às suas âncoras,
esperando o momento
de içar velas e
desaparecer no horizonte.
Para mim – diante
de tão grandes contrastes
que existem nestas
ilhas; tudo é estranho –
uma baía, uma
enseada, uma súbita mudança de maré,
um canal novo e
inexplorado
até agora. o tempo
e a terra firme me aguardam
outra vez – outra
vez, a vida se abre de forma inesperada!
